New Rule Changes for the 2026-2027 College Basketball Season
The NCAA has introduced significant rule changes for the 2026-27 men's college basketball season, impacting tournament structure and player eligibility. The tournament will expand from 68 to 76 teams, adding eight at-large bids and a new 12-game Opening Round featuring 24 teams.
In addition to the tournament expansion, the NCAA has maintained the transfer portal's opening after the NCAA Tournament, allowing players to transfer without penalty. A new age-based eligibility model will grant all college athletes five years of eligibility from enrollment or age 19, but it does not apply to players whose eligibility expired after the 2025-26 season.
Recent legal battles have emerged as players affected by the new eligibility rules seek additional years through state-court lawsuits, with mixed outcomes from local judges. As the season approaches, the NCAA continues to face appeals regarding player eligibility, creating uncertainty for many athletes.
