New Sports Reference Search Feature Allows Nickname Searches
Sports Reference has introduced a new search feature that allows users to look up players and teams by their nicknames, enhancing the search experience across all sports.
This update coincides with the 2026 MLB trade deadline, where various nicknames were highlighted. Notable examples from 19th-century baseball include Tony Mullane, known as Apollo of the Box, who was recognized for both his looks and pitching skills, and Jack Chapman, nicknamed Death To Flying Things, who was involved in a significant game-fixing scandal.
Other unique nicknames from that era include Pearce Chiles, referred to as What’s the Use?, and Jimmy Bannon, who earned the moniker Foxy Grandpa due to his prematurely gray hair. The new search tool aims to provide a deeper dive into the history and stories behind these names.
