Newport Beach Experiences Flooding Due to High Tides and Erosion
Newport Beach encountered flooding on the morning of October 9, driven by a high tide, multiple south swells, and significant beach erosion. Videos shared online depicted several inches of saltwater inundating yards and streets, particularly around the Wedge and Balboa Peninsula.
The ongoing effects of El Niño have led to severe erosion, exposing old structures and increasing the risk of flooding. Local surf videographer Brent Weldon noted that the erosion is unprecedented, with more of the old railroad tracks and rocks becoming visible.
On that Friday, a 5.8-foot high tide combined with swells from Tropical Storm Rachel caused damage to homes near the coast. As the storm approaches, forecasts indicate that the resulting waves and storm surge could lead to even more significant flooding, with warnings issued for potentially life-threatening surf conditions.
