Newport Beach Plans Sand Restoration Amid Severe Erosion at the Wedge
Severe beach erosion at the Wedge in Newport Beach has prompted the City Council to plan a sand restoration project. This decision comes as the area has experienced significant changes due to recent swells and predictions of a strong Super El Niño.
Longtime Wedge surfer Brent Weldon noted that the erosion has exposed old railroad ties and rocks, increasing the risk of flooding and safety hazards. Lifeguard Battalion Chief Adam Yacenda confirmed that debris, including PVC pipes and metal, has become visible, making the beach more dangerous for surfers.
The Newport Beach City Council's initiative to move sand into the area is expected to be a major project that will attract attention from the surfing community and beyond.
