NFL Allows Coaches to Designate Staff for Replay Challenges

The NFL has introduced a new rule allowing head coaches to appoint a staff member to initiate replay challenges during the upcoming season. Previously, only the head coach had the authority to challenge plays by throwing the red flag.

This change requires teams to notify officials about the designated staff member before the game begins. The updated rule specifies that either the head coach or their designated challenger can initiate a challenge before the next legal snap or kick.

This adjustment was not announced during the NFL's annual meeting and did not require a vote from team owners. In 2025, coaches challenged a total of 151 plays, marking the highest number since 2019.
