NFL Confirms Ineligibility for Players Returning to College

The NFL has established that players who depart from the league to return to college football will be ineligible to rejoin the NFL for the 2026 season. This announcement was made by NFL executive Troy Vincent during league meetings.

Vincent clarified that any player opting to return to college would instead become a free agent for the 2027 season. This policy aligns with recent actions taken by the Southeastern and Big Ten conferences, which have also prohibited players on NFL rosters from participating in college football.

Discussions among Atlantic Coast and Big 12 conference leaders are ongoing, with the Big 12 athletic directors reportedly agreeing to implement a similar ban across all sports. The NFL has communicated these eligibility rules to all teams, particularly in light of recent litigation regarding NCAA eligibility that has prompted some players to seek a return to college football.
