NFL Faces Growing Issue with Brawls in Joint Practices
The NFL is confronting a rising trend of brawls during joint practices, as evidenced by recent incidents involving the Miami Dolphins and New York Giants. During a practice session, multiple fights broke out, leading to the removal of Dolphins offensive lineman Austin Jackson and Giants offensive lineman Jermaine Eluemunor.
Giants backup quarterback Jameis Winston was also reportedly involved in the altercations, which caused the practice to be halted several times. Giants head coach John Harbaugh noted that while these practices differ from game conditions, they remain physically intense, and players who throw punches will be removed, similar to game situations.
This issue has become increasingly common, prompting the NFL to consider how to address it effectively. The league has primarily left disciplinary actions to the teams, with recent fines of $500,000 imposed on the Dallas Cowboys and New Orleans Saints for similar incidents. As the situation escalates, there may be a need for more stringent measures or a reevaluation of joint practice protocols.
