NFL Implements New Suspension Formula for Safety Violations

The NFL and NFL Players Association have introduced a new formula that mandates a one-game suspension for players who incur three violations of designated safety rules.

This system allows for violations to carry over from one season to the next, specifically for five types of infractions: hip-drop tackles, horse-collar tackles, launching, hits on defenseless players, and blindside blocks.

Players start each season with a clean slate regarding on-field violations. If a player has one violation in a season, they reset to zero the following year. Two violations in a season result in one being carried over. A player receiving three violations will face a one-game suspension and will carry two violations into the next season, remaining at risk of further suspension. The new formula is designed to encourage players to avoid committing multiple violations.
