NFL Implements New Suspension Rule for 2026 Season

In Atlanta, the NFL has announced that players will receive a one-game suspension this season if they incur three penalties in designated health and safety categories. This decision was made in collaboration with the NFL Players Association.

The league has identified five specific violations that will be closely monitored: hip drop tackles, horse collar tackles, launching, hits on defenseless players, and blindside blocks. The aim is to enhance player safety by focusing on infractions that pose a high risk of injury.

Players voted on these changes during a Board of Player Representatives meeting, and team owners were informed of the new standards in a meeting held on Wednesday. Players will start the season with a clean slate regarding these violations, and those who commit only one infraction will have half of their fine refunded at the season's end. Coaches will also participate in review sessions with the NFL when players approach suspension thresholds. Additionally, teams with numerous violations will face increased financial penalties.
