NFL Implements Stricter Rules to Address Injury-Related Fouls
The NFL is set to enforce stricter regulations on five specific plays that are linked to player injuries, which may lead to more suspensions this season and in the future for repeated infractions.
A joint statement from the league and the NFL Players' Association highlighted that the focus will be on hip-drop tackles, horse-collar tackles, launching, hits on defenseless players, and blindside blocks. Players who incur three violations in these categories will face a one-game suspension, while those with a single violation will receive half of their fine back at the end of the season.
All players will start with a clean slate for the 2026 season, but infractions from this season will carry over. Coaches will also be required to participate in meetings with players nearing suspension thresholds. Clubs with numerous health and safety violations will face increased financial penalties. This initiative aims to differentiate between isolated mistakes and repeated actions that threaten player safety, as the NFL continues its efforts to reduce injuries amid growing concerns about long-term health issues among former players.
