NFL Overtime Decisions: Kick or Receive?
The NFL's overtime format, which guarantees both teams a possession, has led to varied strategies among coaches regarding whether to kick or receive after winning the coin toss. This season, in five overtime games, three teams opted to kick while two chose to receive.
In the latest overtime games, the Commanders won the toss and decided to kick, resulting in a tie against the Giants. Conversely, the Ravens chose to receive and secured a victory over the Falcons. Ravens coach Jesse Minter cited research indicating that teams receiving the ball first generally have a better success rate, along with specific game dynamics influencing his decision.
Meanwhile, Commanders coach Dan Quinn's choice to kick was overshadowed by a clock-management issue at the end of overtime. Earlier this season, other coaches also faced challenges with their decisions, as seen in games where the Jets, Colts, and Saints all lost after choosing to receive or kick. Overall, the current overtime format appears to diminish the significance of winning the coin toss.
