NFL Running Back Market Sees Significant Changes
The NFL running back market has recently experienced a notable transformation, with three players now earning over $20 million in average annual value (AAV). Previously, only Saquon Barkley held this distinction, but Bijan Robinson, Jahmyr Gibbs, and Jonathan Taylor have since joined him, each securing contracts of $22 million or more.
Robinson, selected as the No. 8 pick in 2023, initiated this trend with a $22.25 million AAV deal with the Atlanta Falcons. Following him, Taylor signed an extension with the Indianapolis Colts at $22 million AAV, while Gibbs, the No. 12 pick in 2023, finalized a contract with the Detroit Lions worth $22.5 million AAV. This shift raises questions about whether these contracts will influence the broader market for running backs or if they are merely exceptions.
Robinson and Gibbs are recognized as elite offensive playmakers, with Robinson leading all players in scrimmage yards since entering the league. Taylor, despite injuries limiting his playtime, ranks highly in scrimmage yards and touchdowns over the past two seasons. The disparity in contracts among running backs compared to other positions has led to discussions among players about the market's state, highlighting the economic factors that influence contract negotiations.
