NFL Umpire Larry Smith Suffers Season-Ending Injury in London
NFL umpire Larry Smith sustained a significant injury during a game in London on Sunday, leading to his removal from the season.
While officiating a match, Smith slipped on the wet grass at Wembley Stadium, resulting in a torn quadricep. After falling and attempting to get back up, he fell again and required assistance from trainers from both teams before being carted off the field. Following his injury, the officiating crew continued with six members, redistributing Smith's duties among the remaining officials.
This season marked Smith's debut in the NFL after previously officiating in college football and spring leagues. He will be sidelined until 2027, prompting the NFL to seek a replacement umpire for the remainder of the season.
