NFL's First Game in France Amid Civil Unrest
The NFL will host its first game in France on Sunday, featuring the Pittsburgh Steelers against the New Orleans Saints at Stade de France, located just north of Paris. This event occurs against a backdrop of civil unrest and protests across the country, driven by rising living costs and poor school conditions.
Protests in Paris have escalated into riots, resulting in over 2,800 arrests as violent groups have engaged in looting and clashes with authorities. In light of these events, security concerns for players, fans, and officials have been raised. Amy Trask, a former NFL security committee member, emphasized the league's commitment to security, noting extensive planning and preparation for events, regardless of location.
Despite public speculation about potentially relocating the game, NFL Executive VP Peter O'Reilly confirmed that the game would proceed as scheduled in Paris, with increased security measures in place. Trask outlined the multi-layered security protocols that will be implemented, which include both visible and undercover personnel. The Steelers and Saints are set to kick off at 9:30 a.m. ET and 2:30 p.m. local time.
