NFL's New Three-Strike System Set to Begin in 2026

The NFL and the NFL Players Association have reached an agreement on a new three-strike system that will impose automatic suspensions for repeated violations of five specific safety rules, including hip-drop tackles and hits on defenseless players. However, this system will not take effect until the 2026 regular season.

This delay means that players who have been fined for these infractions during the preseason will not have those fines count against them in the upcoming regular season. Notable players affected include Cardinals safety Dadrion Taylor-Demerson and Wydett Williams, Bengals linebacker Shaka Heyward, Chiefs tight end Jake Briningstool, Rams linebacker Darryl Peterson III, and Buccaneers linebacker David Walker, all of whom received fines for various violations.

Under the new system, a player will only face a one-game suspension after accumulating three violations of the same rule. Players can still violate each rule twice without facing suspension, allowing for some leeway in enforcement.
