NHL Considers $3.5 Billion Expansion Decision in Texas
The NHL is exploring the addition of its 33rd franchise in Texas, with Houston and Austin as the leading candidates. This decision comes as the league enters a six-month evaluation period with the Friedkin family to assess the feasibility of placing a team in either city.
Commissioner Gary Bettman has indicated that the investment required for this expansion could reach around $3.5 billion, which includes both the expansion fee and the construction of a new arena. While no team has been officially approved yet, the NHL Board of Governors will need to vote on the matter, and there is a possibility that neither market may be deemed ready.
Houston has long been associated with NHL expansion discussions, being one of the largest U.S. television markets without a team and already hosting franchises in other major sports. An NHL team in Houston would create a natural rivalry with the Dallas Stars. Conversely, Austin, which lacks major professional sports teams, presents an opportunity for the NHL to establish a significant presence in a rapidly growing city. However, both cities face challenges regarding arena availability, which could complicate the expansion process.
