NHL Salary Cap Projections Indicate Significant Increase by 2029-30
The NHL's salary cap is projected to reach $150 million by the 2029-30 season, marking a 44% increase from this season's cap of $104 million. This forecast was discussed by NHL commissioner Gary Bettman during a recent Board of Governors’ media conference in Manhattan.
Bettman explained that the cap's gradual increase is a result of recovering from years of a flat cap due to the pandemic. He noted that the league's revenue is expected to exceed $8 billion this season, which supports the projected cap increase. However, the current cap is artificially low due to a lag formula established during Collective Bargaining negotiations, which has kept the cap at $104 million instead of a potential $128 million.
As the NHL and the Players’ Association consider future projections, there is potential for renegotiation of next season's cap figure, which is currently set at $113.5 million. This adjustment could help alleviate the underpayment of players and align salaries with rising revenues. The NHL's growth trajectory suggests that the salary cap will continue to rise, benefiting players and teams alike.
