Niall Sheils-Donegan, a player for Great Britain and Ireland, recently took responsibility for a mistake made during the Walker Cup at Lahinch. The 21-year-old golfer missed a crucial six-foot birdie putt at the ninth hole, believing it had been conceded, which led to a dispute with the American team.

During the opening foursomes session, Sheils-Donegan and his partner Josh Hill were leading 4-0 against Ryder Cowan and Josiah Gilbert when the incident occurred. After missing the putt, he instinctively scooped up the ball, but Cowan clarified that the putt had not been conceded, prompting a rules official to intervene. The hole was ultimately awarded to the Americans, allowing them to reduce the deficit.

Despite the setback, Sheils-Donegan and Hill regained their momentum, winning their match 4&3, contributing to a 2.5-1.5 lead for GB&I after the morning session. This victory was crucial as GB&I later staged a remarkable comeback to win the 51st Walker Cup, overcoming a three-point deficit on the final day.
