Nick Faldo, a six-time major champion, was disqualified from The Players Championship in 1999 while playing at TPC Sawgrass. This incident occurred after he shot an 83 on the third day of the tournament.

During his final round, Faldo was informed by an official that he had taken an incorrect penalty drop on the seventh hole. His ball had landed in a tree on the sixth hole, and after taking a drop next to the tree, a spectator alerted a rules official about the improper drop, as Faldo was uncertain of his ball's exact location.

Faldo later indicated that he acted on poor advice from his playing partner, Corey Pavin, who had suggested the drop based on his own recent experience. Despite this, the responsibility ultimately lay with Faldo, who should have returned to the tee for a stroke and distance penalty. The disqualification marked a disappointing chapter in Faldo's career at the tournament.
