Nick Saban Critiques Proposed Expansion of College Football Playoff
The College Football Playoff is contemplating an expansion from 12 to 24 teams starting in 2027, a move that Nick Saban has openly criticized. During a recent appearance on ESPN, Saban articulated his belief that such a significant increase is excessive.
Saban suggested that a more moderate expansion to 16 teams could be a reasonable compromise, proposing that conference championship games could serve as play-in opportunities for the expanded playoff. He noted that while this idea could provide hope for more teams, it lacks widespread support.
The proposed format would feature 19 at-large teams, four champions from the Power Four conferences, and the highest-ranked Group of Six conference champion. Saban pointed out that financial considerations are driving this potential change, stating that universities require additional funds due to rising expenses associated with player compensation and maintaining Olympic sports. Currently, the playoff remains at 12 teams, with no official changes announced yet.
