Nicky Winmar Sentenced to Six Months in Jail for Assault

Nicky Winmar, a former Australian Football League player, has been sentenced to six months in jail following his conviction for assaulting a woman in Cohuna, located nearly 300 kilometers from Melbourne.

The court found him guilty on three assault charges, with Magistrate Trieu Huynh noting the unprovoked nature of Winmar's actions and their serious impact on the victim. In addition to his jail term, Winmar will serve 12 months of community corrections after his release.

Following the sentencing, Winmar's legal team filed an appeal in the Bendigo Magistrates' Court and expressed intentions to seek bail. Winmar, who previously received a community corrections order in 2019 for a drunken assault on a taxi driver, has been removed from the Australian Football Hall of Fame and suspended from his club's elite group due to the recent conviction.
