Nigeria has been eliminated from contention for the 2027 FIFA Women's World Cup after suffering a 2-1 defeat to South Africa in a playoff match at the 2026 Women's Africa Cup of Nations (Wafcon). This marks the first time Nigeria will miss the tournament, having participated in all previous editions since its inception in 1991.

The match took place in Casablanca, where South Africa's Thembi Kgatlana scored the opening goal in the 56th minute, followed by a second from Refiloe Jane in the 77th minute. Despite a late penalty from Nigeria's Christy Ucheibe in the 93rd minute, South Africa held on for the win. South Africa's goalkeeper Kaylin Swart made crucial saves to maintain the lead.

South Africa and Ghana will now compete in an inter-confederation qualifier, having both secured their spots after Ghana defeated Ivory Coast 2-1 in a separate match. The upcoming qualifier will determine which teams advance to the World Cup in Brazil.
