Nihal Sarin Focuses on Global Chess League Ahead of Olympiad

Indian Grandmaster Nihal Sarin is preparing for the Chess Olympiad, where India will defend its Open title in Samarkand, Uzbekistan later this month. Although he is excited about representing India, the 22-year-old is currently focused on the Global Chess League (GCL), where he plays for American Gambits.

During a recent match in Bengaluru, Sarin stated that he is not thinking about the Olympiad at the moment, emphasizing his enjoyment of the GCL and his intention to perform well for his team. The Indian squad for the Olympiad includes four members from the previous winning team, with Sarin replacing Pentala Harikrishna.

India's title defense comes with high expectations, as the team aims to replicate their success from the 2024 Olympiad in Budapest, where they finished ahead of their competitors. However, the challenge of maintaining their championship status is significant, with only one team, Armenia, having successfully defended the Open title in the past two decades.
