NOAA Warns of Intensifying El Niño Event

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has reported that the current El Niño is intensifying, with forecasters indicating that it could surpass the strength of previous historic events. This assessment comes from the latest monthly report by NOAA's Climate Prediction Center.

While independent meteorologists have raised concerns about the potential strength of this El Niño for some time, NOAA has traditionally maintained a cautious approach in its forecasts. The organization officially recognized the development of El Niño in June, initially estimating a 63 percent chance of it becoming a very strong event. By July, this probability increased to 81 percent for the period of October to December.

In its most recent report, NOAA has indicated a 69 percent chance that this El Niño will exceed the strength of past events dating back to 1950. The forecasters noted that while the likelihood of experiencing impacts associated with El Niño is heightened, these impacts are not guaranteed. The agency anticipates a greater than 90 percent chance of a very strong event during the Northern Hemisphere's fall and winter of 2026-27.
