North Korea and Russia Inaugurate First Road Bridge
On September 7, North Korea and Russia officially opened their first road bridge, spanning the Tumen River, in a ceremony that highlighted their growing friendship.
The bridge, measuring 1 kilometer in length, was inaugurated with the first trucks crossing as Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin and North Korean Premier Pak Thae Song addressed attendees via video link. Construction began in April 2022 following an agreement during a visit by President Vladimir Putin to North Korea.
This new infrastructure will allow up to 300 vehicles to cross daily and is expected to enhance trade and cultural exchanges between the two nations. The bridge is named after Yakov Novichenko, a Red Army soldier recognized for his actions in 1946. The relationship between North Korea and Russia has strengthened since the onset of the Ukraine war in 2022, with military cooperation noted in recent developments.
