Norway Seizes Russian Vessel to Support Ukrainian Arbitration Claim
Norwegian authorities seized a Russian vessel in the Arctic archipelago of Svalbard on Wednesday, acting on a request from Ukraine's Naftogaz to enforce a $4.22 billion arbitration award.
This action is part of Naftogaz's efforts to recover compensation following Russia's 2014 annexation of Crimea and the subsequent seizure of Ukrainian energy assets. An arbitration tribunal in The Hague had ruled in 2023 that Russia must pay the awarded amount for unlawfully taking these assets.
Naftogaz has been actively seeking court orders in various countries to seize Russian commercial assets after Russia declined to pay the award. Following the seizure, the vessel, named Professor Molchanov, is prohibited from leaving its current location in Barentsburg, according to Svalbard Governor Lars Fause.
