Off-Key Choir in Southport Celebrates Singing Without Fear

The Off-Key Choir in Southport, established by Diane Chapman eight years ago, invites individuals who believe they cannot sing to join. The choir meets every Wednesday and has grown to nearly 80 members who gather to enjoy singing together.

Initially, Diane placed an advertisement seeking choir members with the unique stipulation that they should not be able to sing. On the first night, she was surprised when 55 people showed up. Among the members is 79-year-old Joy Garvin, who finds joy in singing despite her sons' teasing. Another member, Sheila Byrne, loved the choir so much that she relocated to Southport to be closer to it.

The choir serves as a vital support network for its members, with Debbie Laker Rothwell highlighting its importance during challenging times. The sessions are held at West Lancashire Yacht Club, where Diane and her husband Byron run the choir for free, only collecting small contributions to cover costs. The choir promotes the idea that everyone should enjoy singing, regardless of their perceived abilities.
