Ohtani's Sunday Start in Doubt Due to Knee Discomfort

DETROIT — Shohei Ohtani's participation in Sunday's game against the Detroit Tigers is uncertain due to knee discomfort experienced during a light bullpen session prior to Friday's match.

Los Angeles Dodgers manager Dave Roberts indicated that Ohtani's knee is not yet pain-free, and he is also facing minor issues with his biceps, which had previously caused him trouble. Ohtani has not pitched since July 3, when he threw six innings in a game against the San Diego Padres, and he would only be expected to pitch for an inning or two if he plays on Sunday.

Despite these challenges, Ohtani has continued to hit effectively, maintaining a batting average of .274 with 12 home runs over 44 games since his last pitching appearance. The recent addition of Tarik Skubal to the team has also helped ease the burden of Ohtani's absence from the rotation.
