Oil Prices Decline Ahead of New U.S. Sanctions on Iran
On August 24, oil prices decreased by more than $1 a barrel as investors took profits in anticipation of new sanctions from the U.S. targeting Iran, which may further affect oil supplies from the Middle East.
Brent crude futures dropped by $1.23 to $93.16, while U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude fell $1.36 to $85.70. Both contracts had seen gains exceeding 5% the previous week, as stalled peace talks between the U.S. and Iran limited oil shipments through the Strait of Hormuz.
U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent is expected to announce stringent sanctions during a press conference, raising concerns about Iran's potential response. Analysts suggest that the ongoing U.S.-Iran conflict may prolong the recovery of oil supplies from the region, with recent data indicating a tightening crude supply.
