Older Quarterbacks Secure Starting Roles in NFL Training Camps

The Raiders confirmed Kirk Cousins as their Week 1 starter over 2026's top pick, Fernando Mendoza, while the Falcons opted for Tua Tagovailoa over Michael Penix Jr., who was not deemed ready.

The fifth competition did not materialize as Jacoby Brissett finalized a new deal, preventing Gardner Minshew or Carson Beck from competing for the starting spot. The decisions made indicate that while starting roles are secured, the possibility of being benched remains for Watson, Cousins, and Tagovailoa, with Murray appearing to have the most stability.
