Onni Hautamäki Becomes Finland's First NHL Official
Onni Hautamäki made his NHL debut on Tuesday night at Little Caesars Arena, becoming the first Finnish official to achieve this milestone, coinciding with his 31st birthday.
This achievement follows nearly 15 years of dedication to officiating after Hautamäki transitioned from playing junior hockey. His talent was recognized by IIHF director of officiating Scott Zelkin, leading to opportunities in Finland's top league and international competitions, including a notable role in the gold-medal game at the Olympics.
Hautamäki's debut is a significant moment for Finnish hockey, as he joins the ranks of only four European-born officials in NHL history. His skills and understanding of the game have been praised by NHL executives, and he is expected to officiate around 40 NHL games this season while also working in the minor leagues.
