Options for MLB Teams Post-Trade Deadline

Following the MLB trade deadline, teams have several avenues to enhance their rosters, despite the limitations imposed on major league contracts. The previous system of revocable trade waivers has been eliminated, and since 2019, players on major league contracts cannot be traded after the deadline.

Teams can still trade players on minor league contracts who have not been on a 40-man roster or the major league injured list. While blockbuster trades are unlikely, some recognizable players in Triple-A, such as Michael Toglia and Michael Chavis, remain eligible for trade. Cash swaps are also common in August deals.

Teams can utilize outright waivers to manage contracts, allowing other teams to claim players without a formal designation for assignment. Players claimed off waivers can only participate in postseason games if claimed before the end of August. Additionally, teams may explore independent leagues or foreign leagues for potential signings, as many former big leaguers are available.
