Oscar Piastri Reflects on Singapore Grand Prix Puncture
Oscar Piastri shared insights on his experience during the Singapore Grand Prix, where a puncture played a surprising role in his race strategy. The Australian driver was in sixth place, trailing Lewis Hamilton by 20 seconds when a virtual safety car was deployed on lap 39 due to Lance Stroll's mechanical issue.
Despite having older tyres, both Hamilton and Piastri opted to remain on track. However, Piastri's slow puncture necessitated a pit stop on lap 41, where he switched to softer tyres. He returned to the race with a 37-second gap to Hamilton but managed to close in rapidly, ultimately overtaking Hamilton in the final laps.
Piastri acknowledged that while the puncture was unfortunate, it may have inadvertently helped him secure the overtake. McLaren's team principal, Andrea Stella, noted that the cause of the slow puncture was still unclear and would be investigated with Pirelli. This race marked Piastri's 13th consecutive grand prix without a podium finish, a notable streak in his rookie season.
