Osi Umenyiora Discusses His Journey to NFL Africa
Osi Umenyiora, a former NFL player, reflects on his journey from London to Nigeria and then to the United States, where he discovered American football as a teenager. After playing at Troy University, he was drafted by the New York Giants in 2003, winning two Super Bowls during his ten-year tenure with the team.
Following his retirement in 2015, Umenyiora sought to give back to the sport that changed his life. He initiated NFL Africa, an effort to expand American football on the continent, inspired by his own experiences and the potential he sees in African athletes. His email to NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell led to the establishment of this initiative, which has included camps in several African countries.
Umenyiora emphasizes the importance of providing opportunities for talented athletes in Africa, noting the growth of interest in the sport. He believes that with proper training and resources, African athletes can excel in American football, and he aims to create pathways for them to succeed in the NFL.
