Packers Evaluate Kicker Options After Rookie's Struggles
The Green Bay Packers are facing challenges with rookie kicker Trey Smack, who has missed five field goals in seven games. Despite his struggles, the team plans to retain him for their next game against the Carolina Panthers while exploring potential veteran options.
Smack has successfully converted 11 of 16 field goal attempts, resulting in a 68.8% success rate, and has missed two out of 15 extra points. His inconsistency, particularly on shorter kicks, has raised concerns, especially after two missed attempts contributed to a loss against the Detroit Lions.
While head coach Matt LaFleur expressed confidence in Smack, the Packers are aware of the risks associated with rookie kickers, recalling past issues with Anders Carlson and Brandon McManus. The team is also considering internal options like Lenny Krieg and external candidates from practice squads, including Zane Gonzalez, Jake Moody, and Charlie Smyth, as well as veterans Graham Gano and Matt Prater, should Smack's performance not improve.
