Packers Name Zaire Franklin as Captain for 2026 Season
The Green Bay Packers have announced their five captains for the 2026 NFL season, with linebacker Zaire Franklin being a standout selection. Franklin, who joined the team from the Indianapolis Colts in March, will take on the captaincy in his first year with the franchise.
This decision is notable as it is uncommon for new players to be named captains in Green Bay. Franklin, who was traded for defensive tackle Colby Wooden, had not played a game for the Packers at the time of the vote. He brings a strong leadership background, having served as a team captain in Indianapolis for six consecutive seasons and has been recognized for his communication skills on the field.
Head coach Matt LaFleur has praised Franklin's high standards and leadership qualities. Franklin, a seventh-round draft pick in 2018, has consistently performed well, recording over 100 tackles in each of the last four seasons, including leading the NFL with 173 tackles in 2024. The other captains include quarterback Jordan Love, tight end Tucker Kraft, safety Xavier McKinney, and linebacker Isaiah McDuffie, with Franklin's appointment signaling the team's confidence in his ability to lead the defense as they prepare for their season opener against Minnesota.
