Packers Sign Defensive Tackle Mazi Smith to Practice Squad Amid Depth Issues
The Green Bay Packers have signed defensive tackle Mazi Smith to their practice squad as they face depth challenges on the defensive line due to injuries. This move comes after the team lost several players, including Warren Brinson and Jonathan Ford, to injured reserve.
Mazi Smith, who was selected 26th overall in the 2023 NFL Draft by the Dallas Cowboys, has had a mixed NFL career thus far. He spent time with the Miami Dolphins earlier this year but was released after limited playing time. In his two seasons with the Cowboys, he recorded eight pressures each year, but struggled significantly in run defense.
Currently, the Packers have only four defensive tackles on their 53-man roster, prompting the need for additional support. Smith, at 25 years old, is seen as a potential asset who could develop into a valuable player for the team, especially given the minimal risk associated with a practice squad signing.
