Padres Designate Germán Márquez for Assignment
The San Diego Padres have designated right-hander Germán Márquez for assignment as they added left-hander Robbie Ray to their active roster after acquiring him from the Giants earlier this week.
Márquez, who signed a one-year deal with the Padres in the offseason, struggled during the 2025 season. The team had hoped that moving him away from Coors Field would improve his performance. However, the Padres' rotation signings, including Márquez, Griffin Canning, and Walker Buehler, have not yielded the desired results, prompting the acquisition of Ray and Casey Mize ahead of the trade deadline.
Márquez recorded a 5.26 ERA, with poor underlying statistics, including a low strikeout rate and high walk rate. His performance did not inspire confidence, leading to his removal from the roster.
