Padres Promote Top Catching Prospect Ethan Salas

On September 1, the San Diego Padres announced the promotion of Ethan Salas, a highly regarded catching prospect, to the major leagues. His contract was officially selected, and to create a roster spot, Luis Rengifo was moved to the 60-day injured list. Additionally, the Padres recalled right-hander Jhony Brito from Triple-A to bolster their bullpen.

Salas, who turned 20 in June, is set to become the youngest player in the majors and the youngest catcher since Iván Rodríguez debuted at 19 in 1991. He was a top international prospect, signing with the Padres for a $5.6 million bonus in 2023. After a challenging 2024 season, where he hit .206 with four home runs, and a back injury that limited his play in 2025, Salas has bounced back strongly in 2026, batting .286 in Double-A and .326 in Triple-A.

Salas is recognized as the top catching prospect by several evaluators and is seen as a key addition to the Padres' lineup, which has faced recent struggles.
