Padres Secure 2027 Club Option for Nick Pivetta
San Diego Padres pitcher Nick Pivetta has had his contract altered due to an extended injury absence, which has resulted in the team gaining a club option for the 2027 season. Pivetta was placed on the 15-day injured list on April 13 because of a flexor strain and has not yet returned to play, marking 131 days on the IL.
Pivetta originally signed a four-year, $55 million contract with the Padres in February 2025, which included a player option for 2027. However, a clause in his contract allows the Padres to convert this option into a club option if he spends at least 130 consecutive days on the IL due to a specific injury type. With this clause activated, the Padres now have the flexibility to decide on Pivetta's future.
While the Padres can choose to exercise the $14 million option for Pivetta, they also have the opportunity to negotiate a new contract before he becomes a free agent in November. Pivetta's health will be a key factor in these discussions, especially as the Padres look to fill gaps in their rotation. He recently began a minor league rehab assignment but faced setbacks due to elbow discomfort. The team may consider utilizing him as a reliever if he returns this season.
