Padres Sign Brent Honeywell Jr. to Minor League Contract
The San Diego Padres have signed Brent Honeywell Jr., a right-handed pitcher, to a minor league contract. This move was reported by Yahoo Sports and comes as Honeywell looks to make a comeback after last pitching in the majors during the 2024 season.
At 31 years old, Honeywell was once a highly regarded prospect in the Tampa Bay Rays organization. His career has been marred by injuries, including Tommy John surgery and an elbow fracture, which delayed his major league debut until 2021. He had a mixed performance with the Padres in 2023, posting a 4.05 ERA over 46 2/3 innings, but struggled with home runs and left runners on base.
In 2024, Honeywell had his best season yet, achieving a 2.63 ERA in 37 2/3 innings, primarily with the Dodgers. However, he faced challenges in the postseason, leading to his non-tender by the Dodgers. After not playing in 2025, he is now set to pitch for Triple-A El Paso, with hopes of returning to the big leagues by late September, depending on the performance of the Padres' bullpen, which has been strong this season.
