Parents Deny Charges in Death of Malnourished Child
Kylie Smith and Adam Johnson are facing charges related to the death of their one-year-old son, Maero Johnson, who passed away due to severe malnutrition on August 23, 2023, in St Helens, Merseyside.
A post-mortem examination revealed that Maero's death was caused by severe malnutrition and ketonic hypoglycaemia, a condition linked to low blood sugar from inadequate food intake. The couple is also charged with child neglect concerning their surviving child, and Adam Johnson faces an additional charge for possession of cannabis.
During a brief hearing at Liverpool Magistrates Court, both defendants confirmed their names and addresses but did not enter formal pleas. Smith's solicitor indicated that she would formally plead not guilty at a future hearing. The case has been transferred to Liverpool Crown Court, where they are scheduled to appear on September 10, and both have been released on unconditional bail.
