Parents of San Diego Mosque Shooter File Lawsuit Against Mental Health Facility
In the wake of a mass shooting at a San Diego mosque, the parents of shooter Caleb Vazquez have initiated legal action against Park Mental Health Treatment, claiming the facility ignored warnings from federal law enforcement about their son's concerning behavior. Just days before the incident, the FBI alerted Vazquez's mother about his alarming comments regarding school shootings made on the dark web.
The lawsuit, filed on August 31, details that Vazquez was under treatment for various mental health issues, including depression and psychotic episodes. His mother asserts that despite the FBI's warnings, the facility failed to intervene. On the morning of the shooting, May 18, staff informed her that her son was missing, with surveillance footage showing him leaving the facility the previous evening.
Vazquez and another teenager killed three individuals at the mosque before taking their own lives. The mental health center has disputed the claims in the lawsuit, stating that the responsibility for the actions lies solely with the shooters. The FBI has not commented on the case due to agency policy.
