Patriots and Christian Gonzalez Remain Far Apart on Contract Negotiations
The New England Patriots and cornerback Christian Gonzalez are reportedly not close to reaching a contract agreement. This situation persists despite Devon Witherspoon's recent contract extension with the Seattle Seahawks, which set a benchmark of four years and $132 million.
According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, the Patriots have not shown willingness to meet this financial standard. Gonzalez, who shares an agency with Witherspoon, has expressed frustration regarding the ongoing contract discussions.
As the NFL season approaches, beginning on September 9, Gonzalez is set to earn a base salary of $2.259 million this year. The 17th overall pick in the 2023 draft has achieved significant accolades, including second-team All-Pro honors in 2024 and a Pro Bowl selection in 2025, accumulating 145 tackles, two interceptions, 24 pass breakups, and one sack over three seasons.
