Patriots Use Innovative Tactic to Distract Opposing Kickers
The New England Patriots have developed a novel approach to disrupt opposing kickers during field-goal attempts. This tactic, identified by analytics expert Ryan Paganetti, involves displaying a reverse view of the formation on the video board, which creates an optical illusion with yellow lines that align with the goal posts.
When teams attempt field goals, the actual goalpost flags indicate wind direction, while the flags in the video board image move in the opposite direction. Paganetti, who has analyzed over a decade of Patriots home game broadcasts, noted that this illusion has been consistently used against visiting teams without appearing for the Patriots' own attempts.
Paganetti attempted to replicate this strategy while with the Philadelphia Eagles, but found the video board placement at Lincoln Financial Field ineffective. This tactic exemplifies the Patriots' meticulous attention to detail in seeking competitive advantages.
