Paul Blackburn Emerges as a Key Reliever for the Yankees
The New York Yankees made minimal changes to their bullpen last winter, acquiring veteran Ryan Yarbrough and trading for Angel Chivilli. Despite losing several key players, they signed former starter Paul Blackburn to a $2 million contract, which proved to be a valuable investment.
Blackburn, who previously struggled as a backend starter with the Athletics, transitioned to a reliever role and excelled, posting an impressive 1.59 ERA over 85 innings. He led the league in ERA among pitchers with at least 80 innings pitched, contributing 11 holds and a save.
This season, Blackburn increased his fastball velocity and significantly improved his changeup usage, which became one of the most effective pitches in the league. Although he did not have a high strikeout rate, he achieved success through generating groundballs and soft contact. His performance has positioned him for potential opportunities in the upcoming 2027 season.
