Paul Smith Critiques Support System for Fighters in Combat Sports
Paul Smith, a former British boxing champion, has expressed concerns about the treatment of fighters in combat sports, stating they are often exploited and neglected within a failing system. He is part of the Global Fighters' Association (GFA), which aims to launch a comprehensive inquiry into health and safety standards in the sport.
The GFA, established last year, seeks to create a union that advocates for fair contracts, improved pay, insurance, and health safety standards for fighters. Smith emphasized the inadequacy of the current system, citing instances where fighters have had to rely on public fundraising for medical expenses.
To lead the inquiry, the GFA has appointed barrister Jonathan Caplan KC, who will investigate the governance and treatment of combat sports participants. The organization is also aiming to raise £500,000 through crowdfunding to support this initiative, which aims to provide fighters with protections similar to those in other professional sports.
