Penn State Receives $1.5 Million Grant for Academic Struggle Research

Penn State researchers have secured a $1.5 million grant from the U.S. National Science Foundation to investigate the effects of academic struggle on high school students' critical reasoning skills.

The study aims to differentiate between productive and unproductive struggles in learning, utilizing real industrial data from Penn State labs. It will involve 4,500 students across seven rural Pennsylvania school districts, with participation being voluntary.

Telemetry software will track students' learning processes, including errors and pauses, to provide insights to teachers through dashboards. The project, which includes faculty from various disciplines, seeks to create an AI-ready dataset to enhance understanding of student engagement in STEM fields.
