Penn State Researchers Receive $2.4 Million to Study Abandoned Wells
Nathaniel Warner, an associate professor of environmental engineering at Penn State, has been awarded $2.4 million by the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) to lead a study on the health effects of orphaned and abandoned natural gas wells.
The DEP has identified over 27,000 abandoned wells in Pennsylvania, which pose potential risks to community health and the environment. The funding, part of the U.S. Department of the Interior’s Orphaned Wells Program, aims to assess the impact of these wells on surrounding areas.
The research team, which includes Kenneth Davis and Jack Vanden Heuvel, will collect air, groundwater, and soil samples to identify hazardous chemicals. This data will assist the DEP in prioritizing well-plugging efforts and reducing health risks for nearby residents. Public meetings will be held to engage community members, and a data portal will provide access to the study's findings.
