Penn State Students Achieve Recognition in NASA's LunaRecycle Challenge

Penn State students have made significant progress in addressing space waste management through their participation in NASA's LunaRecycle Challenge.

The university's RECLAIM team secured $125,000 in prize money for developing innovative recycling solutions aimed at handling materials like plastics and metals during lunar and deep space missions. The challenge, which is part of a $3 million competition, encourages teams to create technologies applicable both in space and on Earth.

During the competition's second phase, which took place in Alabama from August 24-28, 14 finalist teams showcased their prototypes and digital models. Although the first-place prize of $775,000 was awarded to MIT's CEREBRUZ team, RECLAIM was honored for its innovative approaches in both the prototype and digital twin categories. The competition attracted over 1,200 registrations, marking it as the most popular in the history of NASA's Centennial Challenges.
